It is with great pride and satisfaction that we share that our colleague and MU-Sofia alumnus Dr. Nikolay Sharkov was elected and officially took office as President of FDI (World Dental Federation) – the largest global dental organization, which unites nearly 200 national associations from over 130 countries and represents more than one million dentists around the world.
Dr. Sharkov is a well-known and established lecturer at the Faculty of Dentistry of the Medical University of Sofia, where until recently he was among the active members of the academic staff and shared his professional experience with generations of students and young colleagues. We are extremely proud that he continues to uphold the good name of our university and the Bulgarian dental school at the highest international level.
In his opening speech in Shanghai, Dr. Sharkov outlined the priorities of his mandate, emphasizing prevention, innovation, sustainable development, and people-centered care. He emphasized that FDI will work for wider access to dental care, for the integration of oral health into general health systems, and for a more responsible use of digital technologies in the profession.
The selection of Dr. Nikolay Sharkov is a high recognition of both his professionalism and dedication, as well as the contribution of the Bulgarian dental community to the development of global dentistry. This is a prestigious position that places Bulgaria at the center of the international scene and gives us the opportunity to actively participate in building the future of the profession.
