Five scientists from MU-Sofia, four of them from the Faculty of Pharmacy, made it into this year’s so-called Stanford ranking of the most influential scientists in the world – the Top 2% of over 11 million researchers, assessed based on their publication activity and citations.  

These are Prof. Irena Kostova, PhD, Prof. Lyudmila Boyanova, PhD, Prof. Irini Doychinova, PhD, Assoc. Prof. Dimitrina Zheleva – Dimitrova, PhD and Prof. Ivan Dimitrov, PhD. 

The ranking, developed by the team of Prof. John PA Ioannidis  from Stanford University, uses data from Scopus (Elsevier) and bibliometric indicators to distinguish scientists with the strongest impact on world science. It shows the top 2% influential scientists from 22 scientific fields and 174 subfields. The development is based on standardized information on citations, citations excluding autocitations, H-index, Hm-index corrected for co-authorship, as well as for citations of articles in different authorship positions. The ranking is divided into two – for 2024. and for overall career development. 

Prof. Irini Doychinova and Prof. Irena Kostova from the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Medicine have been in the ranking for years (see HERE and HERE ), and are now in the Top 1% of the most influential scientists in the world based on their overall career development. This year, they were joined in the group of leaders by Prof. Lyudmila Boyanova from the Department of Medical Microbiology at the Faculty of Medicine. In 2021, she was in the Top 2% in the same ranking. 

Assoc. Prof. Dimitrina Zheleva-Dimitrova from the Department of Pharmacognosy and Prof. Ivan Dimitrov from the Department of Chemistry of the Faculty of Pharmacy are the new names from MU-Sofia included in the category for contribution in the past 2024.

This year, 91 Bulgarian names appear in the ranking. The fact that 6 of them are lecturers from the Medical University speaks to the high level of professionalism and significant scientific activity developed by the academic community at the Medical University-Sofia and its Faculty of Pharmacy.
